Regular hours, overtime and estimated pay
Overtime Calculator
Split weekly hours at your chosen threshold and estimate regular pay, overtime pay and gross pay with a 1.5×, 2× or custom multiplier.
Calculation used
40.00 regular hours × $20.00 + 5.00 overtime hours × $20.00 × 1.5
Important: This tool estimates pay from the values you enter. It does not determine whether overtime is legally required, which hours count, or which rate applies.
How to calculate overtime pay
First split total hours into regular and overtime hours using the threshold that applies to the period. Multiply regular hours by the regular rate. Multiply overtime hours by the regular rate and the overtime multiplier, then add both amounts.
Example: 45 hours at $20 per hour
With a 40-hour threshold and a 1.5× multiplier, 40 regular hours produce $800 and 5 overtime hours produce $150. Estimated gross pay is $950 before tax and deductions.
The threshold is not a legal conclusion
Overtime rules can vary by country, state, agreement, occupation and worker classification. For United States federal information, consult the U.S. Department of Labor overtime guidance. Check the rules that apply to your situation before using an estimate for payroll.
Frequently asked questions
What does time and a half mean?
It means 1.5 times the regular hourly rate. A $20 regular rate becomes a $30 overtime rate.
Is overtime calculated weekly or per pay period?
This calculator uses the period and threshold you enter. In the United States, federal overtime is generally evaluated by workweek rather than by averaging two weeks, but exemptions and other rules may apply.
Does this include taxes or deductions?
No. The result is a gross-pay estimate before taxes, benefits, deductions or payroll adjustments.
